Get Ready for Summer Reading Fun!

Summer is on its way, despite the recent weather's indications to the contrary. The summer months will bring both warmer weather and Brooks Memorial Library's annual Summer Reading Program. As past participants well know, the Summer Reading Program is a great way to spend some of your free time pursuing an activity that you enjoy. Best of all, you get a cool prize for completing the program.

Interested in signing up for the program? Stop by the library anytime between June 14 and June 26 to register. Registering for the program is a straightforward process and should only take a minute or two of your time. The library staff will be more than happy to help you. They also have a lot of great book recommendations, so check in with them whenever you think you've run out of things to read.

The program itself begins on June 28 and runs through August 7. If you want to qualify for a prize, you will need to read at least 2 hours per week for each of the six weeks of the program. A reading log will be kept at the library's circulation desk for you to chart your reading progress during the program. At the end of the program, all participants who have met the reading goal will be entered into a raffle. Raffle prizes will be distributed on or after August 14.

We hope that you'll choose to join in on what promises to be a really great summer reading program. And if you have any questions about the program, let us know!

Cartoon Camp This Summer!

The recent spate of warm weather and the dwindling number of school days left in the year have inspired many of us to make summer plans. If you’re 16 or over and an aspiring cartoonist, there’s a great opportunity that you should be aware of when scheduling your summer.

The Center for Cartoon Studies will be holding a one-week workshop this summer. The Create Comics Summer Workshop will be taking place from July 13 – 17 in White River Junction. Workshop instructors include Steve Bissette (Taboo, SwampThing), Robyn Chapman (Hey! Four eyes!) and Alec Longstreth (Phase 7). And what makes this “boot camp” for budding cartoonists even more amazing is that the Center is offering a scholarship. All you need to do is download an entry form (available at http://libraries.vermont.gov/sites/libraries/files/cbec/ccsscholarshipapp09.pdf) complete the form, and bring it to Brooks. We’ll take care of the rest. If your computer access is limited, you can also pick up an entry form from the library. Since we need to have the forms in by May 27, please have your entry ready by May 23. No more than 1 entry per person, please.

Oh, and if you’re not 16 yet but will be by June 1, you are eligible to apply!
